What's New in Culture Media MacConkey Sorbitol Agar with Cefixime & Tellurite (CTSMAC) Catalogue No. PM22 CTSMAC is a highly selective medium used for the isolation and differentiation of Escherichia coli serotype 0157:H7. The major advantage is the increased selectivity of the medium resulting in fewer false positives. Both the FDA and CFIA recommend the use of CTSMAC for the isolation of E. coli 0157:H7 from foods. Regan-Lowe Agar Catalogue No. PR35 & PR36 Regan-Lowe Agar is a superior medium for the isolation of Bordetella pertussis. Both a non-selective formulation (PR36) and selective formulation (PR35) are available. Regan-Lowe Agar is a nutritious charcoal-based medium containing defibrinated horse blood that allows for luxirant growth of Bordetella. The selective formulation contains the first-generation cephalosporin, cephalexin, which provides excellent inhibition of nasopharyngeal flora; several studies indicated the superiority of cephalexin over other antibiotics including penicllin and methicillin. |
